Refrigerator in garage was turned off [duplicate]

Refrigerator in garage was turned off [duplicate] - Red and Black Toyota Off-road Vehcile

We just realized that our garage refrigerator/freezer was not on. The eggs are still cold to the touch but the vegetables, rice w/shrimp and meatballs in the freezer are not frozen but still cold. The ice cream is mostly melted. This tells us that the frig hasn't been off for a long time but we don't know for how long. Should we throww all the frozen foods away? Or would it be safe to cook everything instead.

Best Answer

I'm afraid the frozen goods are a lost cause. Throw them away. The eggs in the fridge are probably fine. Break one in a dish and give it the sniff test. If it still smells clean and good, they are probably fine. But don't delay in using them. Make a souffle!

Can a refrigerator stay in an unheated garage?

Most refrigerators stop working at some point during the winter months in an unheated garage, depending on climate and how well the garage is insulated. Most manufacturers do not recommend placing a refrigerator in temperatures below 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

What happens to a refrigerator in the garage?

If the temperature in your garage dips below a certain level, the thermostat senses the drop in temperature and may register that the fridge is already cold enough, even if it isn't. When this happens, your fridge may shut off, allowing the food inside to defrost or get too warm.

Can a fridge be stored in a garage unplugged?

Drain the water reservoir, according to manufacturer's instructions, if your refrigerator has a water dispenser. This is essential if the refrigerator will be stored in an unheated garage, where freezing temperatures can cause the water reservoir to rupture and leak.

What happens if refrigerator is switched off for long time?

In principle, it really is that easy, but if that's all you do before leaving your appliance switched off for an extended period of time, you can be in for an unpleasant surprise: nasty odors can develop in the plastic. Those can be hard to get rid off.
