microwave use after cell phone heating

My daughter put a cell phone in the microwave and switched it on. The phone was heated for less than a minute at maximum temperature. There was a strong smell from the burnt phone and the microwave. Can we use the microwave again? Which steps are necessary to bring the microwave to a condition where food isn't contaminated (both from an aroma and a food safety standpoint)?

I would ventilate it well, wipe everything down and wash up the turntable. Then, when the smell has cleared (and doesn't come back when the door has been shut for a while) use it but only for covered (loosely) food at least at first.

I'd also test that it heats up a cup of water before cooking anything real in it.

Can I use phone next to microwave?

Nothing will happen. The cell phone makes more microwaves than any that leak out from a common microwave oven. Nothing. Except if it's a smart phone its Wi-Fi could well drop out if it's connected on the 2.45 GHz bands and the microwave is running.

What happens if you put your phone near a microwave?

When you close the lid of your microwave oven, the metallic grille blocks the waves cooking your food from escaping out. And when you place your phone inside it (with the oven turned off), it would block Wi-Fi signals from reaching your phone.

Do microwaves interfere with cell phones?

Microwave ovens use a frequency of 2450MHz. This is actually fairly close to the frequency that Wi-Fi uses so that is why using the microwave could affect your Wi-Fi if you're close to it. However, cell phones use frequencies from 600-800MHz and from 1800-2100MHz so there should be no interference.
